Disabled Persons - Restoring Dignity - Building Hope

Pharokilo Ghar
The Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DRC), also known as Pharakilo Ghar established in 2015 following the devastating earthquake, was created as a safe and nurturing space for children with disabilities who faced the risk of school dropout, exploitation, and neglect. A vision of SDSS, DRC supports 21 children (present time)—10 girls and 11 boys—who live with various disabilities and social stigma.
The center provides access to physical rehabilitation, formal education, life skills training, and personalized care while promoting protection and inclusion. Its core objectives are to ensure inclusive education for children from marginalized backgrounds, protect them from abuse and exploitation, and provide essential healthcare, treatment, and assistive support to enhance their well-being and daily living.
Handicraft
The Handicraft Initiative is designed to empower individuals with physical disabilities by involving them in creative and therapeutic activities. The project focuses on crafting handmade items such as paper jewelry (necklaces, earrings, bracelets), keyrings, baskets, pen holders, and file holders using recycled materials like paper and cardboard. It also includes sewing sanitary pads, repairing torn clothes, and stitching household items such as bedsheets, pillow covers, and quilt covers. The main objective of the project is to promote self-reliance among people with physical disabilities by providing practical skills and encouraging meaningful contributions through work suited to their abilities.

Joni's House with Sundar Dhoka

The Joni's House with Sundar Dhoka Project, currently being implemented in Kailash Rural Municipality of Makwanpur district, is a three-year initiative (January 2023 – December 2025) aimed at supporting approximately 500 people with disabilities and their families. The project envisions a dignified life for Persons with Disabilities through physical, social, economic, and spiritual restoration. Its core objectives include raising community awareness on disability through local stakeholder engagement; improving the overall well-being of individuals with disabilities through holistic interventions; empowering Persons with Disabilities and their families through self-realization and the formation of Disability Support Groups; and promoting inclusive service delivery and planning by strengthening the responsiveness of local duty bearers through sensitization, capacity building, and collaboration.
Engage Disability Conference
Disability continues to be a significant issue in Nepal, where individuals with disabilities often face poverty, stigma, and limited access to inclusive services and opportunities. Alongside government efforts, civil society organizations and faith-based institutions play a vital role in addressing these challenges and promoting inclusive environments. This conference serves as a platform to bring together individuals and organizations with shared values, enabling them to exchange experiences, raise public awareness, and advocate for disability inclusion within communities and institutions across Nepal.

International Family Retreat &
Wheels For The World
(Joni and Friends)
The Wheels for the World and International Family Retreat (IFR) programs, led by SDSS in partnership with Joni and Friends, serve individuals and families affected by disability across Nepal. These programs aim to restore mobility, dignity, and hope through the distribution of mobility aids and provide emotional encouragement. While Wheels for the World focuses on personalized wheelchair distribution and support services, the IFR offers a safe and inclusive space for families to experience companionship. Together, it promotes inclusion, community relationships, and compassion in action.
Bikash's Wheelchair Workshop
Bikash’s Wheelchair Workshop is dedicated to improving mobility for individuals in need by collecting and refurbishing used wheelchairs for redistribution. The workshop also conducts assessments to customize wheelchairs according to individual needs, ensuring proper fit and functionality. Additionally, it supports wheelchair users by assisting with new wheelchair applications and promoting accessible infrastructure to enhance mobility and inclusion. The workshop also offers training for users and caregivers on proper wheelchair use and maintenance, empowering individuals to navigate their environments with confidence and independence.

Bikash Shield

Bikash Shield is a national-level sporting initiative for Persons with Disabilities, held every two years with participation from all seven provinces of Nepal. The event prioritizes inclusion of Persons with Disabilities who are marginalized by gender, caste, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. Named in memory of Bikash Adhikari, the son of Kosh Bilash Adhikari and a passionate advocate for the rights and dignity of Persons with Disabilities, the project honors his legacy of promoting joy, respect, and equality for all. The primary goal of Bikash Shield is to engage wheelchair users in sports, fostering social inclusion, enhancing self-worth, and shifting societal attitudes toward disability by highlighting ability, resilience, and the potential for a fulfilling life.
Medical Assistive Devices
Those in need of medical appliances such as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, prosthetics come to SDSS. We have access to and provide these products to the poor of our society who cannot afford and/or find the care in fitting needed. We provide services to ensure the "best fit" , and understand the use and care of the appliance given. We also provide information for living a fruitful life with the assistance of the appliance. Dignity is restored through our loving care and encouragement.

Social Rehabilitation
Sometimes persons with disabilities are kept hidden from society, isolated and alone.
Helping family and community members in dealing with the social and cultural barriers related to disability is vital to holistic care.
Counselling, advocacy, workshops, and brainstorming engagement are facilitated to educate and empower families and caregivers. This strengthens and creates socially healthy attitudes toward persons with disabilities.
